American Academy of Natural and Social Sciences Holds Seminar on Biodiversity Conservation
Brief Introduction

On February 9, 2025, the American Academy of Natural and Social Sciences convened an internal seminar on “Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Development” in the United States. The seminar was organized by the Academy’s Center for Ecological and Environmental Studies and brought together researchers from relevant internal divisions.

The session was chaired by Deputy Secretary-General Dr. Michael Anderson, with opening remarks delivered by Director of the Center for Ecological and Environmental Studies, Prof. Olivia Green. She highlighted that biodiversity conservation has become a critical global priority, emphasizing the need for integrated scientific research and policy coordination to address ecosystem degradation and species loss.

During the keynote session, several internal experts presented their research findings. Senior Ecological Researcher Dr. Benjamin Clark discussed “Habitat Protection and Restoration Strategies,” focusing on ecosystem resilience. Dr. Rachel Kim, Head of the Environmental Policy Program, delivered a presentation on “Balancing Economic Development and Biodiversity Protection.” Meanwhile, Conservation Biology Researcher Dr. David Wilson shared insights on endangered species monitoring and data-driven conservation approaches.

The internal roundtable discussion was moderated by Director of Academic Affairs Dr. Jonathan Reed. Participants engaged in detailed discussions on key topics, including: (1) biodiversity conservation under climate change pressures; (2) the role of technology in ecological monitoring; (3) international cooperation mechanisms for species protection; and (4) community-based conservation models. Researchers also exchanged perspectives based on ongoing internal projects and field studies.

In the concluding session, Director of the Policy Research Office Dr. Laura Bennett summarized the main outcomes and outlined follow-up actions. The Academy plans to compile a policy-oriented report and expand interdisciplinary research collaborations in biodiversity conservation.

This seminar further strengthened the Academy’s research coordination in ecological and environmental fields and contributed to advancing scientific understanding and policy development in biodiversity conservation.
